We offer two Game Design courses for students, ages 10-14.
Our classes allow students the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the elements and mechanics of creating a computer game by actually designing two games in each class. Students take home the game design software so that they can continue to design games at home.
The software used in these classes is robust enough that it is used in many university-level introductory game design courses, yet it is consistently mastered by students, ages 10-14, in our program.
Below is information which explains the differences among the courses to better help you select a class for your son or daughter.
This class introduces students to making their own computer games. Instructors lead lessons which teach the most commonly used game actions and events, including sprite design, offensive and defensive movements, background music, sound effects, score-keeping, and the use of variables to change motion and direction.
Prerequisite: Beginning Game Design course or Age 11-14
Students create two games which cover intermediate game development techniques such as 3D modeling, landscape rendering, 3D camera views, special effects, scripts, music, and more! Students design a two-player 3D racing game with realistic driving motion and a 3D Arena game featuring fast-paced maneuvering.
This half-day camp lets students create games which can be played on mobile devices with an Internet connection, including iPhone, iPad, and Android. Game projects incorporate features and game play present in some of the most popular mobile games.
This beginning-level class teaches the fundamentals of touchscreen game design using Game Maker 's drag-and-drop software. Student games are saved as HTML5 files and uploaded to a server for access on web-connected mobile devices. Note that games are not apps, but can be played on the browser in most iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile devices.
