What's Special About TechKnowHow's Game Design
Classes: This camp is a hands-on opportunity for students to design and complete two computer games. Students experience the full process of creating a game from beginning to end, and take home their work as well as software to continue making games at home.
Focus on Creativity: Students create their own look, flow,
and complexity for their games. Instructors lead students through each step of making a game, but students have control over the gameplay, visual elements,
settings, and use of music and sound effects. The software used is open-ended, allowing students to experience the "mechanics" of game design, versus using a pre-packaged program where choices for creativity are limited.
Powerful Software: The software used in this class is robust enough that it is used in many college-level introductory game design courses, yet it is consistently mastered by students, ages 10-14, in our program.
Resources for Continuing Education at Home: Students take home a professional, full-features version of GameMaker software, as well as class lessons, and a library of graphics and music files for use in creating games at home.
Knowledgeable Instructors: Instructors lead the class through sequential lessons to complete a game. As part of the process, instructors discuss game design concepts, answer questions, and assist students in troubleshooting their work.
Use of Logic and Structure: Students learn how to create a logical sequence of actions for game events and actions. This includes an introduction to using variables, code blocks and conditional instructions (if/then logic). Students do not program in code, but learn programming concepts and thinking.
